Terminus

Director and Co-Writer Mark Furmie, and Cinematographer Kieran Fowler have wrapped production on their indie sci-fi feature Terminus.

Kieran describes their process,

"We chose Panavision Close Focus Primo’s & C-Series anamorphic’s as our main kit and B-series anamorphic’s for a lightweight rig option. From our first creative discussions we always knew we wanted to go anamorphic with Terminus.

It's a story that has a classic sensibility about it, shrouded in mystery and set amongst vast landscapes of the American countryside. The choice to frame 2:40 anamorphic not only helped create a bigger feel for the location’s and immerse the viewer in a wider frame, but we used what people may call the ‘imperfections of the older lenses’ as an aesthetic choice (Which is something I am seeing more and more in modern cinematography). We loved the classic blue flares from the Panavision anamorphic's, it was our own way of integrating a part of classic sic-fi visual story telling. We also made use of the other unique lens quality’s such as distortion on the wider angles and the softness you sometimes get from going wide open, as apart of our arsenal of visual techniques.

The Close Focus Primo’s also enabled us to get really close with the actors without the use of diopters, which means we were using less glass in front of the lens and saving time."
